All of your files must be backed up before your district computer is turned in, reimaged, or replaced.  You MUST move any data stored locally on your computer to Google Drive which has UNLIMITED STORAGE and accepts all file types. Any data stored on your computer will be removed so it is your responsibility to make sure you have backed up all necessary data.  This handout will cover the local computer locations where data is most commonly stored.


Once folders and files are in your Glenbrook Google Drive you will be able to access them anywhere and anytime you sign in (including images, videos and audio files). To save time, use Google File Stream to upload a folder instead of individual files because it will keep the original folder structure and individual files within it.  The amount of time it takes to transfer data to Drive depends on the amount of data you are uploading.

Personal Data and Devices

The district is not responsible for personal data such as music, photos, or movies and cannot support personal devices.



iLife Files

iLife files (i.e. Photos, iTunes, iMovie, etc.) you have backed up will need to go back in the same local folders on your district computer. 



Turn Off Conversion

In Google Drive, click the Gear icon in top right corner > Settings >  Uncheck Convert Uploads.


Documents can be converted and made editable after the file is uploaded if needed.



Remove Unwanted Files

Decrease transfer time to Google Drive by deleting duplicate files before uploading. Delete files by dragging the item to the Trash, click the Trash, then click Empty.

Where might my data be stored locally?

Your data might be stored in the following locations.  Please note that it is possible for data to be stored elsewhere; however, these are the most common areas:

  • Desktop

  • Documents

  • Downloads (check for specific documents you do not have saved to another location)

  • Movies (includes iMovie content)

  • Music (includes iTunes content)

  • Pictures (includes Photos content)

  • Downloads (check for specific documents you do not have saved to another location)

  • Internet Bookmarks or Favorites (see sidebar)


Optional: Files or folders stored on the network  (GB_STAFF or GB_FILE) can also be moved to Drive.
