New to PowerSchool? Here are 10 functions to get you started!


Top 10 Basic PowerSchool Functions 


1) Navigate From Page to Page

In PowerSchool, best practice is to not use the back arrow to navigate.

  • Use the breadcrumb trail to move from screen to screen. 

  • You can always click on PowerSchool at the top of your screen to return to your Start Page.


2) Search for a Student

You can search for students in a number of ways in Powerschool. 

  • By default, your PowerSchool home page is a Search page. You can easily search for students the following ways:

    • By ID#: enter the student ID

    • By Student last name: start entering the last name of the student and hit enter. You will either see a screen for one student or a list of students with a similar name. Select the student you were searching for.

    • By Grade: you can narrow down your search by limiting it to grade level. Click on 9, 10, 11, or 12.

    • By any field listed in the field drop-down menu → 

  • After you find the student’s name, you might need to select the student again from a filtered list.

  • After you select the student, you will see a list on the left of information you can view regarding each student.



3)  Move from student to student

You can always return to the PowerSchool Start Page to search for another student but here’s a shortcut!

  • While on any student screen, the upper left corner contains a few links. Click on Switch Student to enter a student’s ID or name 

  • This will keep you on the same screen while searching different students.



4) Look up Student Information 

    To find available information about a student, search for the student then:

  • Under Information, click on the necessary screens. Some that are available are:

    • Contacts

    • Demographic

    • Photo

  • Use the breadcrumb trail or the PowerSchool logo to return to other pages when you are finished.



5) View a Student Schedule

    After you have found the student you are looking for:

  • In the Scheduling section, click on one of the available views to see a student schedule.

  • Exp = Period #;  Trm = Semester 1 (S1), Semester 2 (S2) or Year Long (15-16)

6) Find a Teacher Schedule

From the PowerSchool start page:

  • Under the Functions section, click on Teacher Schedules.

  • On the left, click on the teacher whose schedule you need to see.

  • You will see a List View of the teacher’s schedule


7) Find a Class List

To see a class list (roster), find the teacher’s schedule (see #7), then:

  • Click on the number enrolled in the class. It is a blue link that will take you to the class roster



8) Search for a parent by name

After you login to PowerSchool:

  • From the Start Page, click on the Contacts Tab.

  • Search by names, emails, addresses or phone.



9) Student Alerts

Icons appearing on a student screen indicate a special alert exists regarding the student.

10) Viewing the Master Schedule

If you need to view teachers and rooms and sections check the Master Schedule.


  • Click on Master Schedule

  • Enter options

  • Make sure to check “view as list”

  • Submit

  • Results can be copied and pasted into Excel if desired.


The next time you view the Master Schedule, you might need to scroll to the bottom of the screen to change your options.
