Dealing with missing or incomplete assignments can get tricky. Do you enter a 0? Leave it blank? This gives an overview of gradebook options available for missing or incomplete work and how those options impact the student grade.  Questions? Contact the Educational Technology Trainer at ext. 4818.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

“Blank” vs “0”

Entering a blank vs. a 0 has a very different impact on a student’s current grade.

  • Leaving an assignment grade blank has no impact on the student average. It is as if the assignment was never given to that student.

  • Entering a  score of 0 does impact the student average.

Both a blank and a 0 will appear in the parent/student portal

Assignment Statuses

Adding an assignment status can provide more information to parents, students AND the teacher! Assignment statuses have NO impact on the grade and are purely informational

  • To add an assignment status, right click on the cell and select the appropriate status:

    • Missing: Indicates that work has not been turned in

    • Collected: Indicates the work has been turned in

    • Late: Indicates the work was/is late

    • Incomplete: Indicates the work was/is incomplete

    • Exempt*: Indicates that student is exempted from turning in this work

    • Absent: Indicates that a student was absent when the assignment was collected

  • To remove an assignment status, click on the cell and deselect the status.

*Exempt status notes:

  • If an Exempt status is entered with no grade, the assignment never appears in the parent/student portal. It is as if the assignment never existed for that student.

  • If an Exempt status is entered with a grade (e.g. a low score that is dropped) the assignment will appear in the parent student portal with an “exempt” indicator

  • If you have marked an assignment Exempt and later want to count a grade, you must remove the “exempt” status to include the score in the student’s average.

Parents and student will see a legend explaining the statuses in the parent/student portal.

Assignment Comments

Comments can be added to provide even more information regarding a student’s score on an assignment. Assignment comments can be viewed in the parent/student portal.

  • To add a comment to an assignment, click on the cell to which you want to add a comment.

  • Enter a brief comment in the comment window at the bottom of the Score Inspector

  • Close the window.

If a comment no longer applies and you want to remove it, you can re-enter the Score Inspector and delete the comment.
